AFRICA REACT (UK) works to build awareness of the people in one of the poorest provinces in South Africa, the Eastern Cape. We directly offer them the chance of a truly bright future. The aim of this website is to inform you about the people of the Eastern Cape, the programmes we run and how you can play your part – either by becoming a member, or purchasing something that directly supports the work of these people. I hope this site will inspire you to make a difference to the lives of the disadvantaged African communities in the Eastern Cape. More than 22% of the population aged 20 years or older has never received any schooling (Government statistics 2006). We provide training, education, housing and jobs to these communities. They are the sole beneficiaries and are playing their part in contributing to their own welfare.
PROJECTS AND POTENTIAL FOR AFRICAN WOMEN
The ‘bead ring collection’ boasts a range of colourful items, carefully crafted by hand in the homelands and townships of the Eastern Cape Province by African women. All proceeds go towards building and sustaining the income-generating workshops for unemployed women. It has been evident that elderly members of homeland communities participate in craft-making, and produce high-quality products in their own homes, working at a pace that is comfortable for them. They are encouraged to continue contributing to their families.
In South Africa, unemployment is extremely high and it is seen as one of the most pressing socio-political problems facing the government. There has been a lively debate on the extent, nature, and cures of unemployment in South Africa but the outcome has been rather inconclusive.
