BAFTS AND FAIR TRADE The British Association for Fair Trade Shops (BAFTS) is a network of independent fair trade shops across the UK. BAFTS: - promotes fair trade retailing in the UK - seeks to raise the profile of fair trade on the High Street and - provides a point of contact and communication for the exchange of ideas among our members. What makes a fair trade producer? Clearly it is not sufficient just to be an individual or enterprise operating in a developing country. The concept of fair trade is rooted in improving the livelihoods of poor and marginalised people from developing countries. Thus, a fair trade producer is an enterprise that is owned by this target group of people, either as an individual or cooperative, or is an enterprise that employs people from this target group and meets certain employment standards consistent with improved livelihoods. These include fair wages, providing clean and safe working environments, allowing workers the freedom to join trade union groups, providing skills training and promotion prospects. Services offered by the H.O.P.E. Foundation (026-153 npo), The Restoration of Human Abilities Association (008-840 npo) and AFRICA REACT (UK) are at no cost to participants. Projects are dependent on donations from the public and support through the income generated by the AFRICA REACT (UK) online store. Both organisations are Registered Charities in the Province of the Eastern Cape, South Africa. |
